I’m sitting in the airport thinking about some of the easiest swaps I have made in my life to make substantial changes to my health, and the first thing that came to mind was laundry detergent.

For the first 20 years of my life, I used Tide, Downy, Gain, Arm & Hammer… you name it. I thought these were the only options out there! Now I have so much more knowledge on laundry products, and although that might sound ridiculous, you have no idea how impactful ditching these toxic detergents has been for my health (and can be for yours).

What’s Wrong With Tide?

Tide laundry detergent is filled with chemicals that can be harmful to your health and the environment. It contains 1,4-dioxane, a chemical linked to cancer that can get into your body through your skin or by breathing it in. Tide also has synthetic fragrances that can trigger allergies, cause skin rashes, and make it harder to breathe. Plus, the brightening agents in Tide don’t break down easily… which means they can end up in our rivers and oceans, harming fish and other wildlife.

I used to use Tide every day and noticed I had strange rashes, itchy skin, and more acne. That’s because when you wash your clothes with harsh detergents like Tide, those chemicals stick to the fabric and touch your skin all day, causing these annoying problems! Ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can irritate your skin and make things worse.
