My Tips For Thanksgiving Day

Advice to navigate your Thanksgiving day and meal

Hi everyone,

With Thanksgiving coming up tomorrow, I want to share a few thoughts that I hope will make the day feel lighter, calmer, and a lot more enjoyable. Holidays are meant to be special, but they can also bring stress, food pressure, long travel days, and a sense of “falling off track” with your routine & health journey. I put together a list of five tips that are the exact ones I’ve used myself the past few years, and they make a big difference!

1. NO SKIPPING MEALS!

Skipping breakfast and lunch to “save up” for the big meal will backfire. It leaves you hungrier, less grounded, more faint, and much more likely to overeat later to a point you don’t ever want to get to. A balanced breakfast and lunch with protein, fiber, and healthy fats help steady your energy and set the tone for the day. For breakfast, think a yogurt bowl, eggs and fruit, a smoothie, etc. For lunch, have a salad, wrap, or make a balanced plate. Do not go into the ‘big meal’ hungry!

2. Get some movement in early

You do not need a long workout. Even a quick walk, light lift, or stretch session helps regulate your mood and digestion and makes you feel better. Move because it will make you feel so much better throughout the day… trust me! If the day gets busy later on, which it likely will, you will already have done something for yourself.

3. Build your Thanksgiving plate with intention

Now let’s talk about the meal. This is NOT about restriction. It is about creating a plate that helps you feel good. Build the base of your plate with vegetables and salad, then load on the protein (turkey, chicken, etc.). After that, choose the holiday dishes you genuinely enjoy. Remember this: portions are what matter most. You don’t need an entire cup of gravy… a drizzle will still give you the satisfaction of eating the food.

4. Slow down and check in with yourself

One of the easiest ways to feel better on Thanksgiving is simply to eat slower. This is something that I can absolutely work on too. Sometimes, I catch myself eating way too fast, basically shoveling the food into my mouth. Try to put your fork down between bites. Take a breath. It isn’t a race! Notice when you start to feel full. You can always go back for more, but pausing for a moment gives you time to feel how you’re doing.

5. Enjoy the day without letting food be the focus

The best part of Thanksgiving should not be the meal. It is the people, the conversations, and the traditions. Of course, the food is an amazing aspect of it, but try not to focus on it the entire day! When you shift your attention away from food, the day naturally feels more enjoyable and much less stressful.

Wrapping Up…

I hope these tips help you feel better and more confident heading into the holiday. Remember that Thanksgiving is ONE DAY… and one meal will not, and cannot, throw you off track. If you are feeling stressed (for any reason) about Thanksgiving, remember you are not alone… and before you know it, it will be Friday! Wishing you a very happy and peaceful Thanksgiving!
